Explain what the hot smoke does
Smoke from a fire is hot, and hot gases expand and become less dense than the cooler air around them. Being less dense, the smoke rises and collects in a layer near the ceiling, in the same way that a hot-air balloon floats upward.
Describe the air near the floor
The air layer near the floor stays cooler and denser. Because the smoke has risen away from it, this lower air holds much more breathable oxygen, carries far less smoke, and is clearer — so a person there can breathe more easily and still see the way to the exit.

Why this method works
The whole effect is driven by convection, which depends on density differences with temperature. This natural separation sets up a layered room — a hot, smoky, oxygen-poor region at the top and a cooler, clearer, oxygen-rich region at the bottom. Staying in the lower layer protects a person from three hazards at once: heat, toxic smoke inhalation, and loss of visibility. It is the same physics that makes chimneys draw and hot-air balloons rise.
